Judy Aguirre (pronounced uh-gear-ray), a wife and mother of two young boys, fell in her Baldwinsville home last September suffering a broken neck which left her paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. In a community-wide effort to help the Aguirre family, several local companies have donated supplies and employees of McClurg Remodeling & Construction Services have volunteered to construct a wheelchair accessible deck at her home. The project starts Wednesday, May 19 and the community can follow its progress on Facebook and Twitter.
"Our family is enormously grateful to so many people and companies in our community who are helping my sister and her family during this very challenging time," says Jennifer Harte, Judy's sister. "The deck will enable Judy to spend time with her boys and family in the yard she has always cherished. She is very strong willed and determined to recover from her injuries and remain an active mother."
"The project will take up to three weeks to complete, depending on weather," says Brian Ciota, vice president and co-owner of McClurg. Businesses donating materials for the project include: 84 Lumber, East Syracuse; Benjamin Electric; Black Glass; Calley's Hardware; Healy Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning; Liverpool Lumber Company; Matheison Portable Toilets; Nightingale True Value Hardware; Skaneateles Scapes; Tiger Claw Hidden Deck Fasteners; Trex Decking; and Van Derhoof Roofing Company, Inc. McClurg employees are donating labor.
Judy's life changed dramatically after the accident. For three weeks she was in intensive care and she spent another 10 weeks in rehabilitation. While medical expenses were covered by insurance, rehabilitation services, adaptive equipment and home conversion expenses were not. Anyone interested in helping the family can contact Jennifer Harte at (315) 254-9171.

When the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Central New York began its search in March for a local remodeling company to undertake a project to grant a local child's wish for a new play room, the organization got much more than expected - a generous offer from McClurg Remodeling & Construction Services. McClurg worked with 20 local companies to donate an unusually extensive amount of work for this wish. In a remarkable collaborative effort these companies partnered to create an unforgettable wish experience, bringing a child's dream of a play room to life.
"We were so impressed and honored to learn that McClurg, a highly respected company in our community, offered such a huge commitment to help this family," says Tina Kapral, Manager of Program Services at the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York. "We feel so indebted to McClurg and the other participating companies. Their combined generosity was overwhelming and they made this child feel so special. They really touched all of our hearts."
To grant this wish, McClurg reached out to 20 of its local subcontractors and suppliers, who were all more than happy to contribute. The extraordinary amount of labor and materials donated for this project, valued at approximately $40,000, were provided by McClurg and the other local companies.
"We always feel privileged to have the opportunity to help families like this one," says Scott McClurg, President of McClurg Remodeling & Construction Services. "There are so many good people and companies in our community who are more than willing to step up and help in any way."

The John A. Weeks headquarters building at Baltimore Woods is getting a helping hand from the community in order to undergo a much-needed renovation, reported Patty Weisse, Executive Director of Centers for Nature Education, Inc. at Baltimore Woods in Marcellus, N.Y.
The project is an upgrade to the main office and adjoining areas. McClurg, a remodeling and construction services business also located in Marcellus, which previously had done work for the center, is leading the volunteer effort.
"While the Weeks Interpretive Center is relatively new, the staff office space in the older building has been in need of significant renovations for quite some time," says Weisse. "We are very appreciative of the leadership provided by Scott McClurg and his company to move this project forward. The response from others in the community - stepping up and donating materials - has been very gratifying as well."
The Baltimore Woods Nature Preserve has been offering environmental education programs to the community for more than 40 years. The preserve is owned by Save The County, a private not-for-profit organization.
"Baltimore Woods is a tremendous asset to the Central New York community," says Scott McClurg, President of McClurg. "We embarked on this volunteer effort to ensure that the facility is modernized and fully accommodates the increasing needs of the staff and guests. We are proud to be leading this effort."
In addition to providing consulting services for the project at no cost, McClurg is donating the equivalent of one week of labor by two carpenters. Additionally, Erie Materials is providing interior doors, Purcell's is supplying paint and Liverpool Lumber will donate the lumber, framing and other needed supplies.
The contributions from McClurg, Erie Materials, Purcell's and Liverpool Lumber make up approximately half of the amount needed for this project, added Weisse. "We are still in need of volunteers and donations for electrical work, painting and other services to complete the upgrade," she said.
The renovation began this week. Companies or individuals interested in volunteering or donating materials or services should contact Patty Weisse at (315) 673-1350.
