McClurg was honored to be part of the remarkable event at The Baltimore Woods Nature Center on Monday, April 8th, 2024, which brought together 160 friends and neighbors for an unforgettable experience: witnessing the natural phenomenon of the total eclipse.
Guests arrived with picnic lunches from the Ice Cream Sandwich Shop in Marcellus, blankets, and chairs, and found their perfect viewing spots. Some enjoyed card games, and brought books and telescopes, while others explored the self-guided trails. Stationed along the open lawn were opportunities for interactive learning, allowing participants to make predictions, contribute to a community mural, or delve into the intricacies of weather patterns alongside a seasoned meteorologist. Kids delighted in S’mores over the fires, lemonade, face painting, and more.
It was a day filled with excitement! The McClurg Team was there to welcome families as they arrived, distributing solar eclipse glasses, trail maps, and lists of activities. We met travelers from Colorado, Delaware, and New Jersey, all searching for a family-centered viewing spot. We welcomed students from Cornell and Ithaca who found our event online and jumped in the car.
As the moment of totality finally arrived, there was a hush over the crowd as we collectively took a breath together. What an incredible experience-- being surrounded by friends, new and old, made it that much more memorable.
Such an extraordinary event would not have been possible without the vision and dedication of Whitney Lash-Marshall, the Executive Director of The Baltimore Woods Nature Center, and her team of committed Environmental Educators. Their passion for environmental stewardship and community engagement created the perfect foundation for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, fostering connections and memories that will endure for years to come.
